Looking In Early:  Odds for 2018-2019 National Champion

What are we going to do now?  The college football season is done and once again (seems rather repetitive here in recent years) the Alabama Crimson Tide have taken home the trophy for the best college football team in the land.  This is 2018 and with recruiting and such college football almost seems like a year-round sport.  And while many are not looking at rankings one group that is taking a peak early is gamblers.  Odds have already trickled out for which teams are favorites to take home the trophy next season.  Let’s take a quick look at a few teams with odds for the next season taken from the Westgate Sportsbook in Las Vegas as of January 9th, 2018.

The Favorites:

Alabama Crimson Tide 5/2 (+250): The Crimson Tide are the initial odds-on favorite to repeat next year. Some things are left to be decided at quarterback after freshman Tua Tagovailoa worked his championship game magic but it’s sometimes good to have options. They will also have a to replace DC Jeremy Pruit(took Tennessee job) and a few guys on the defensive side of the ball due to graduation or early NFL declaration.  Don’t feel too bad for Nick Saban and his team, as there are several blue-chip prospects waiting to instantly step in.

Clemson Tigers: 6/1 (+600): The Tigers are predicted to again be among the top of the class for college football in the 2018 season. Returning starter Kelly Bryant may have to battle highly recruited incoming freshman Trevor Lawrence for QB job. They will have plenty to replace as well as they will lose 3 OL and possibly elite defensive talent to early NFL entrants.

Georgia Bulldogs 8/1 (+800): The runner-up will look to avoid any hangover and appear to be well stocked to do so. Freshman QB Jake Fromm will return to lead an offense that will be without two backs in their stable in Sony Michel and Nick Chubb who will be applying their talents on Sundays in the future. Georgia is fortunate in that there is quality talent on the roster currently and more coming in to fill the void left by the backs.  Biggest decision may be that of all-world linebacker Roquan Smith who has not decided but is projected as a first-round NFL pick should he choose to go pro.

Ohio State 8/1 (+800): The Ohio State Buckeyes will enter the season fired up after just missing the playoffs this season when Alabama was chosen over them. They will need to replace QB J.T. Barrett as well as the majority of their offensive line but they have top rated prospects ready to step in.

Other Notables:

Oklahoma Sooners 18/1 (+1800): Will need to replace Heisman winner Baker Mayfield but Kyler Murray should keep the offense humming. Also, have plenty to replace on the defensive end but Oklahoma hasn’t won much because of their defense anyway in recent times.

Wisconsin Badgers  25/1 (+2500): Will have to replace quarterback Alex Hornbook but their offensive line is full of monsters and has depth to spare. They do avoid Ohio State again until the title game in the Big 10

Florida Atlantic 500/1 (+50000):  Save your money of course but it should still be entertaining watching Lane Kiffin interact on social media.
