The New Year’s Six

The New Years Six

Now that we have gotten most of the “other” bowl games out of the way it’s just about time for the real fun start. Besides the obvious playoffs semifinals matchups the college football playoffs setup there are an additional four games selected to make up the so-called New Year’s Six. These six bowl games are selected by the committee and are comprised of the following: Sugar, Rose, Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, and Peach. Let’s take a quick look at each matchup along with the spread and total for the contest.

Peach Bowl: No. 7 Auburn Tigers  vs No. 12 University of Central Florida Knights

Prime spot for UCF here to show they actually belong. The Knights got basically zero respect from the national scene despite their undefeated season. UCF wants to show they belong and will be given a prime spot to do so versus the Auburn Tigers.

Oddsmakers are not giving UCF much respect either as they opened as a +8 point favorite and the line currently sits as high +10 at some shops.  The total is currently sitting at 67 after being as low as 65 at release.

Cotton Bowl: #8 USC Trojans vs #5 Ohio State Buckeyes

Outside of the final four, this may be the most intriguing matchup of the bunch. It’s like a classic Rose Bowl matchup has been moved to Texas. Both teams feel disrespected and let down as to not make the final despite winning their conference. Ohio State especially as they were oh so close to squeaking in with two losses.

The line opened with the Buckeyes as a -6.5 favorite and quickly moved to its current position as a -7.5 favorite. The total currently sits at 65.

Fiesta Bowl: #11 Washington Huskies vs #9 Penn State Nittany Lions

In a matchup of teams left wondering what if the Huskies take on the Nittany Lions. Both teams entered the season with high aspirations and will be settling for a consolation prize in the Fiesta Bowl. Team motivation could be a huge factor in how this game plays out.

Penn State opened as a -2 point favorite and action has remained around that number since release. The total is currently at 55 which is also where it opened.

Orange Bowl: #6 Wisconsin Badgers vs #10 Miami Hurricanes

Both teams went into conference championship week with wins getting them a spot in the playoffs.  Both left empty-handed and now face each other in the Orange Bowl. Wisconsin narrowly fell to Ohio State in the Big-10 title game to ruin their undefeated season while Miami was bludgeoned by Clemson in the ACC title game. Miami will need to come out and prove their lofty rankings were not a fluke and get a jump on next season.

The Hurricanes opened as a +6 point underdog but the line has pushed to only +4.5. The total has hovered around 45 to 45.5 since it was posted.

Sugar Bowl: #4 Alabama Crimson Tide vs #1 Clemson Tigers

What college football fan does not know about this matchup? This is the third part of a trilogy between national title contenders. Nick Saban vs Dabo Sweeney. Do we really need to say more?

The Tide opened as a -2 point favorite and currently sits at -3. The total sits at 47 with both teams having stellar defenses.

Rose Bowl: #2 Oklahoma Sooners vs #3 Georgia Bulldogs

The Granddaddy of them all hosts the other semifinal playoff matchup where the Georgia Bulldogs will battle the Oklahoma Sooners where the stakes couldn’t be any higher. This matchup pits the Sooners high octane offense vs the Bulldogs ultra fast and physical defense.

The spread opened with Georgia as a +1 underdog but Bulldog action has pushed the number to Georgia now being favored at around -2. The total is set at 60 points which is where it opened at most shops.
