Actually they don't run away. If they run away its because something chased them. They will usually be very close to where they were last seen. My cat disappeared for 2 days when I first started letting him go outside and he was right next door the whole time hiding. The way I found him was to just stand there calling him for about 15 minutes straight until finally he meowed back and it was all good from there.
