  2. You know. I see stupid management shit all the time. When I worked for the Government, I thought it was because there is no profit motive. When I got into private industry, that rational went up in smoke. Virtually every private group I felt with had idiots running stuff, and I had to work for them and many were very high up the ladder.

Work for yourself. Then the only idiot you have to worry about is yourself.

Stu's biggest financial mistake was crossbooking with someone like Doyle Brunson. The ratio of money pissed away was probably 19-1 sports betting to drugs. He was obviously a skilled gambler when it came to poker, blackjack and gin rummy where his eidetic memory gave him an edge along with his aggression but he was eaten alive betting against even a rudimentary 'model' (which I believe Doyle and co had at their disposal for MLB/NFL at that time) in those soft markets.

I've always been a ham and egger math guy...what I mean is, I was never remotely close to being the sharpest guy in my math classes at university. Actually, I was considered a dolt as I was in applied math, while the brainiacs were all math theory, Naturally, they treated us "applied" guys like shit. To boot, I ran track, so as a "jock" I was a double Neanderthal.

I get back to a school reunion, and I run into some of the 100 lb brains and they are all, to a man, burned out, bitter PhDs in dead end teaching jobs, most not tenured, totally jealous of my success when they find out how I've done.

I'm like, "dude, if I had your gifts, and my 'street smarts', I've gone much farther....come to think on it if I can chose only one, I'll take my street smarts every time."

Great gifts often leads to great arrogance...actually, I'll change that to 'most often'.

  4. Based on Namath's numbers, compared to other great QB's in his day, he isnt even close. Classic case of his legend being much bigger than his actual results.

Now does he deserve to be in the Hall of Fame based on his contribution to the game? Namely his guarantee and backing it up in the Super Bowl.

    Thats debatable.

Dude, you weren't there. Go talk to some of the old guys. Namath was massive. The entire world was abuzz when he did something. Like shaving his legs for that panty hose commercial.

No doubt, the Hall of Fame is got a lot of stupid stuff, but Namath is not one of them. The combined NFL is just about due to him. The bonus wars of the 60s that he was a part of helped drive the leagues together. Re: the Hall: Ray Guy getting in this year for example is SHAMEFUL. His impact on the sport was/is MASSIVE and now his numbers look puny too.

If you want to bitch about something, go bitch about that.

  5. Coach Taylor is a sharp poster. I enjoyed reading his posts across the street. But on this one he is just off base' date=' plain and simple. Not one NFL QB playing the game today would last one half, let alone an entire season or career, playing football the way it was allowed to be played 45 years ago...[/quote']

I know he has a good rep, saw his posts over at EOG.

He's still a young coach that wasn't around when they played football based on the run vs "Air Coryall", "West Coast", etc these days.

But he'll watch some game tape on SB III and come back a better coach.

  6.

You're absolutely right. The best he can be is Joe Namath.

A guy with 173 career TDs and 220 Interceptions...

    A 62-63 record...

    A 50.1% career completion percentage...

    A 65.5 career QBR...

Joe Namath is the most overrated NFL player of all-time.

Well, actually I was talking about Namath's bad boy image.

But, CT, since you've gone on tilt on this, Namath played his entire career on bad legs and still had a defining career. He was critically hurt at Alabama and signed while never telling anyone how bad of shape he was in. In spite of this the was essentially the player who showed the old AFL was the equal of the NFL by beating the Colts in SB III who were consider one of the teams of the decade. Remember, in SB I & II the AFL teams were pretty sad. Namath took advantage of the Colts taking the Jets lightly by audiblizing at the line and superior game management, and the game really was never in doubt. Remember, the line on this game was 17+ and the Jets made the best team in the NFL look bad. If you don't believe it, go look at the old game tapes.

Right, his numbers aren't that good. But, he personally won perhaps the most important game that any old AFL team ever played up to that point. And, unlike those HS teams you coached in Texas, he didn't just bearly win in the last few minutes, he made them look bad. That game cemented the AFL/NFL merger. After that, the shit talking about the "inferior" league stopped.

    Read some history CT.

BTW, you guys going to get a Friday Night Lights movie going or not?

  7. Haven't been to EOG since Sunday but I can't believe they deleted that thread.

JK was saying how he wishes TGF well and wanted to help out by leaving sticky's up etc. I guess the guy is two-faced.

I seriously doubt JK did it. He's a sport guy...old school, remember, he can barely turn on his own computer. Blondie was on over at Peeps saying she could help him find the on/off switch...but that she was pretty busy so only if he asked nicely.
