He could've chosen to save face, bet like crazy, and lost 10k to get a free $1500 room and prove himself to TGF, OR do the responsible thing and get a free/cheaper room, play at his comfort level, and not risk losing someone else's money, or money that he couldn't afford to lose. My guess is given his admitted history, wife is probably concerned about him going in the first place and IF he is getting money from her family at some point, will be watching. I think he did the right thing here. He probably contacted FM thinking he would give him a free no strings room, and when the terms were clear, he chose the better course of action for once.
