It’s because the generation is down too. They start there of course. Transmission comes second. Since the generation system was destroyed they have to make a new one. Back up ones still have to be tailored for the job assuming there is one. If not, you gotta wait for China to make it. "

I remember a few days ago when I thought the power could just snap on at any moment like I have every other time. Then I followed my powerline through the neighborhood. Tree on it, tree on it, part of house on it, pole down and on and on. No progress in a week whatsoever other than 1 tree gone. "

Many terrific tree and stump removal specialists in Iowa.........very prompt also.

President Donald Trump approved a major federal disaster declaration for Iowa on Monday, Aug. 17, less than 24 hours after Gov. Kim Reynolds sent him a request that detailed nearly $4 billion needed to assist with recovery from last week's derecho.

The president plans to visit Cedar Rapids on Tuesday to survey damage and meet with state and local officials, a White House official confirmed to the Des Moines Register Monday afternoon.

"I just approved an emergency declaration for Iowa, who had an incredible windstorm like probably they've never seen before. It really did a lot of damage," Trump told reporters Monday morning.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (CNN)Thousands remain without power, dozens are in shelters and pantries are popping up to provide food for those who've lost everything.

A week after disastrous storms, Cedar Rapids "is like a battlefield," a Desert Storm veteran said.

It was one of the hardest hit cities last week, with more than 800 buildings suffering partial collapse of the roof, walls, ceiling or floors, Cedar Rapids Fire Chief Greg Smith said. More than 20 school buildings in the city sustained damage as well.

Now, the city is still struggling to get back to normal.

"Literally it looks like the building was hit with artillery shells," Tim Kipping, who served as a Marine in Desert Storm, told KCRG as he stood in front of a decimated apartment complex where the crew said they could smell the stench of rotting food.

Jennifer Smith recalled being trapped in her care at an intersection August 10 when the winds hit.

"I threw my seat back, as I'm seeing stuff hitting my window, and I was like, 'Oh, my God,' and I was shaking," she recalled. "There were trees everywhere out there and those trees were falling down."

Winds of more than 100 mph were recorded August 10 as the line of severe storms moved through the Midwest leaving damaged homes, downed trees and more than a million without power.

Flattened cornfields all along I80

Before the storm hit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture had been expecting a record national corn crop this year of 15.3 billion bushels harvested from about 84 million acres. Iowa was to provide about 18% of that production. Iowa’s crop was valued at about $9.81 billion in 2019.

The Iowa Corn Growers Association said it is too soon to accurately describe how much of this year's crop was lost. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said Tuesday that tens of millions of bushels of grain stored at farm cooperatives and privately on farms were damaged or destroyed.

Western Iowa has been declared an extreme drought zone and corn plants there were already weakened due to a lack of moisture. Those fields are likely a loss, Hart said.

According to a USDA report dated Aug. 1, farmers in much of central and eastern Iowa had been expecting near-record yields with healthy plants that could bou
