Wow.  Seems like you were just here.  Where did you stay?  How bout that weather on Tuesday?  How did you fare? There has been a lot of covid around, but you rarely see masks.  A few of the extreme liberals at DMG will wear them occasionally when it’s going around, but I haven’t seen one in a while.   Maybe a random tourist.

On tuesday the rain mostly missed deadwood, i think down in sturgis you had lots of rain and hail, I walked around all  afternoon/evening and there was zero rain(it did rain overnight). I stayed at the gold country inn a few blocks up from the action.

I was very disappointed in the DMG basically having no tables open, I've been to deadwood twice this year and over all 4 days they have never had a single BJ table open at night. Everyone else in town is business as usual. i did Ok gambling, only lost about $300 over the two days. My favorite places are the silverado, the gold dust and tin lizzy.(tin lizzy comps call drinks)

I mentioned somewhere that I saw no masks except one car that had both people inside masked up, other than that not a mask in town that I saw.

What time of night are you there? The problem is that M-T they only have a couple of dealers (and one was out this week) so if someone is playing Ultimate and 3 card or something they don’t have the manpower. And they have a lot of regular Ultimate and 3 card players those nights.  But hard to believe blackjack wasn’t open

Some of the other casinos don’t shut down their pits ever…  I know the Lodge doesn’t…but might only have a table or two open.  Silverado and the others probably don’t  close late ant night  either.   When it’s not busy, they send dealers home early. DMG focuses on W-S, esp concert weekends, and the weekends are generally fully staffed.   Sucks tho.   I wouldn’t probably go there during week either.  I know a few of the dealers at Lizzy and Silverado…I used to play at Silverado a lot…all of those places feel a bit antiquated, which sometimes is what I want, but meh. I just play at DMG on Saturdays usually because I get a ton of promo and I know everyone.   But Caddy’s and  the Lodge are the nicest, and  they are usually busy all the time….esp Caddy’s.   You ever go there?

I would swing through the DMG twice a day, maybe 6 and then closer to 9pm, no BJ ever, I would ask too, they'd say once the 1 3 card table empties they'd be happy to open it.

I've been to caddilac jacks but that's a long walk from the rest of downtown, it reminds me of casinos around here, not familiar with the lodge - where is that one?

Once again i was stunned by the poor players and the level of tipping, saw several people who tipped every hand for the dealer - 1 guy was betting $5 for the dealer every hand(imagine that), his regular bet was only $15-20 too, he's just throwing his money away.

Saw another guy want to stand on 8(a regular hard  8 because he didn't want to take the bust card, really bad players all around. Another guy bought in for $60 and asked for 10 whites, then he spread the whites around on every hand at the table on dealer tip bets. I was thinking WTF are you guys doing? i saw another guy make bet $5 for the dealer, he lost the hand and then said he felt bad so he gave the dealer another $5. Crazy stuff. :mutley

The sad thing about the mountain grand is they try so hard to be upscale, they have valet parking and a door man who opens the door for you, but they dont have any casino workers so what's the point? I felt bad for them, for midweek everyplace downtown had decent crowds, some places i couldn't get a seat, but the mountain was really dead.

Yeah,  part of the biggest issue is it’s off the beaten path and people don’t want to walk up from mainstream downtown.  But it’s really only casino concert venue in town, so that’s when they make their money.  Also has arguably one of the best sports books.   Some nights I’ve walked in during week and the few dealers just standing around,  I suggest Thurs on if going there.

Biggest problem around here is staffing.  They need dealers everywhere.

Hal. I’ve done the $5 tip bet every bet when playing  tables but only on larger bets.   Even then throwing money away…

What was dealer’s upcard?  I know it seems like common sense to always hit on hard 8, but I’ve seen some reasoning arguing for that scenario depending on what dealer card is, and/or and how the hard 8 is made up.  Or maybe he was counting cards,  or maybe he was just a bad player.  That’s the simplest answer which is usually the right one lol.

There's no count where you wouldn't hit a hard 8.

In a single and double card deck yes.  I don’t remember the particulars of why in a larger shoe, but it was his opinion, or one strategy.   I play basic strategy so I personally would always hit.
Maybe I read the explanation incorrectly.  Long ago.  I haven’t played BJ regularly in a lonnnng time.  Only explanation would be if he’s counting maybe?   I really haven’t seen that many terrible players here, but quite a few counters get tossed. There are newbies of course, but usually the table or dealer will nudge them to make the right play.

No no no, he was just a moron, he was finally coerced into taking a card by the dealer and other players, he got a 10(for 18) and someone said "see, that's a lot better than 8", he won too.
