Phil Lyman noted that the first Black woman to be appointed port commissioner is one who "knows nothing" about the job but is focused on inclusion. Republican Phil Lyman blamed the state's black governor, Wes Moore, for the tragedy: "This is what happens when you have governors who put diversity before the well-being and safety of citizens." In response, Brandon Scott accused his critics of racism and said his goal was to destroy the way of life of the white minority, which in Baltimore has already been reduced to 30%.
