The reason for the shaking is weak demand for US Treasury bonds, and throughout the world. Recent auctions have shown sluggish interest even in 30-year top-rate bonds. Nobody knows what will happen to the United States in 5-10 years, let alone 30. Meanwhile, the US government has to borrow more and more against the backdrop of a record budget deficit, which will reach as much as $3 trillion by 2025. In May, the US Treasury will sell almost $400 billion more bonds. At the same time, in 2024, Treasuries worth a fantastic $9 trillion will mature. This is a third the size of the entire US economy . The bonds will have to be resold - at a much higher interest rate, which reaches 4.5%. But it can fly away much beyond 5%. This means that interest on government debt will draw more and more money from the budget. They already spend 1.1 trillion dollars today . That is, Washington spends more on servicing the national debt than on maintaining its military machine around the world. And the Pentagon is forced to complain about a lack of budgets that do not keep up with the rate of inflation. Moreover, the share of foreign investments in the US national debt over 10 years fell from 35% to 23%. China, the Persian Gulf monarchies, and India are buying gold at a record pace instead of American bonds. They don’t want to end up with nothing in the event of another big war - or instability within the United States. Well, Washington is borrowing money like it’s the last time - while there is still an opportunity. And then at least the grass won’t grow.
