Twenty-five Muslim men, including three teenagers, are facing the death penalty in Sudan after being charged with apostasy for following the wrong version of Islam.

The men, aged between 15 and 51, belong to the minority Hausa ethnicity, many of whom follow a different interpretation of Islam to the one sanctioned by Omar al-Bashir’s government.

They are accused of “rejecting the prophet Muhammad’s teachings”, rejecting the Hadith and taking the Qur’an as the sole source of religious legitimacy – a crime punishable by death

Will liberals claim this has nothing to do with Islam? Death penalty for apostates is quite a popular belief for muslims across the world. Check out this 2013 survey (page 55)

Death for insulting their prophet is another popular idea. This is moderate Islam.

As an aside, do you remember the clockboy Ahmed who created quite a drama in Texas and has now sued his former school for $15 million? A few weeks after the incident, he went to meet the Sudanese president who declared in 2010 that the country would follow Sharia law: “We don’t want to hear anything about diversity – Sudan is an Islamic and Arabic country."

Expect tolerance and equal rights in non-muslim countries and sharia in muslim countries - win-win formula for muslims.
