KingRevolver
He's done for this year. Can he possibly come back and win one in four years?
MonkeyF0cker
No. Is this a bet for four years from now? Or forty years from now? When he's dead? When does it become official that he won't win another gold medal?
KingRevolver
It's not a real wager out there, that I know of. It's just a question that I'm asking. And, I think it's safe to say that if he didn't win, or even participated, in the next Olympics... that would be it.
MonkeyF0cker
He's not nearly as good as he used to be. So, I don't think he'd be able to even if he wanted. I think he's pretty set on retiring anyway.
WVU
He would be a fav to win a relay gold if he were to swim in 2020. He won't but you never know.
jasson621
What WVU said he could come back swim the fly in any relay leg in 2020 and be chalk to get a Gold
mikeman
He could do it, what's he now , 30? A couple swimmers won gold at age 35 this week I believe, it would be tougher to dominate obviously but he could win a couple.
tripp
All depends on him. If he wants to come back hed win at least one or two golds. Most close to him seem to think he is for sure done though, but minds change Swimmers dont usually last as long as 31 (phelps current age) but the point was made, and its a great one, that it had very little to do with the fact that the athletes couldnt produce at that age as well as 19-25 but almost entirely to do with the fact that olympic athletes cannot usually devote that much time to their sport because they do not make enough money. So by 25 or so they had to retire and move on and get a full time job in another field Phelps is obv a rare exception to the Olympic model because he is a multi millionaire from swimming. Just from looking it up quickly his net worth is estimated at $55 M, only $1.8 M of that coming from actual olympic medal winnings. So money isnt holding him back and in fact is a large motivation to keep going as obv all that endorsement money fades if he stops competing in the olympics.
