Five Notre Dame players were arrested Friday night following a traffic stop, and a sixth faces a preliminary felony charge after he was arrested early Saturday morning in a separate incident.

Senior safety Max Redfield, sophomore defensive back Ashton White, sophomore running back Dexter Williams, sophomore linebacker Tevon Coney and freshman wide receiver Kevin Stepherson were all arrested by Indiana State Police in Fulton County (Ind.) Friday and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana after an officer conducted a traffic stop at approximately 10:07 p.m.

Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of a handgun without a license.

Police pulled over a 2007 Ford Focus near Fulton County Road 375 North that was allegedly traveling 73 mph in a 60 mph zone, police said. The car also had an improper taillight, police said. White was operating the car, police said.

The trooper said he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car, and a police dog allegedly located marijuana. Police said they found marijuana and a loaded hand gun in the subsequent search.

In a separate incident, senior cornerback Devin Butler was arrested early Saturday morning on preliminary charges of felony battery against a police officer and misdemeanor resisting a police officer, according to South Bend Police. The arrest took place at approximately 12:28 a.m. at 1631 South Bend Ave., South Bend -- the address of the Linebacker Lounge -- and he was booked at 1:28 a.m.

The Observer first reported Butler's arrest.

Official charges are expected to be brought forth against Butler on Saturday afternoon, according to the St. Joseph County Police booking desk.

Devin Butler - DB - Fighting Irish

Notre Dame indefinitely suspended senior CB Devin Butler following his arrest on Saturday.

Per a probable cause affidavit, Butler punched a police officer outside of a bar and then tackled him. Authorities eventually were forced to use a stun gun on the 6-foot, 195-pounder. HC Brian Kelly said that he has spoken with Butler, as well as the five Irish players arrested for marijuana possession in a separate incident on Friday. One of those five -- safety Max Redfield -- has been dismissed from the team. "Their conduct fell short of what we expect from those who represent our football team and this great university," Kelly said in a statement.

Max Redfield - DB - Fighting Irish

Notre Dame dismissed senior S Max Redfield following his arrest on Friday.

Redfield and four other Notre Dame players were arrested after they were caught speeding. The officer who pulled them over smelled marijuana and a drug dog was subsequently used to sniff out the vehicle. Redfield and two others (WR Kevin Stepherson and RB Dexter Williams) were also charged with possession of an unlicensed handgun. Redfield alone has been dismissed here. This isn't his first brush with discipline. The 6-foot-1, 198-pounder was suspended for a violation of team rules prior to Notre Dame's Fiesta Bowl showdown with Ohio State this past winter. Redfield's future plans are not yet known at this time.

We are recruiting with the big boys now.

Wish it would drop to 3 so I can pound ND.

Uncle Kevin broke records without arrests, but Davies couldn't coach any D. Uncle Kevin, Urban and Dan Mullen, a good defensive coach and ND would have been set. Good to see Urban and Mullen bring the Cuse/ND offense with them.

It didn't matter who was coaching the D, it was in title only. Davies was the D coordinator.

Davies wanted more of a grind-it-out offense (like Georgia) to shorten the game and keep his D off the field. When you are getting 4-5* offensive players, why hold them back? Bob couldn't get those guys anymore and it set them back a few years.

The ND fans are nuts. I remember when they despised Dan Devine, they loved Charlie Weis though.
