Heads Up Titans NFL Fantasy Option

Let me start this out by saying i think we got a really good GM up here in Nashville,Tennessee.

The Titans from their first year in 1999 through 2011 had seven winning seasons and playoff appearances and were a pretty good team throughout those first dozen years.

From 2012 through 2015 the Titans were stuck with a really bad GM and bad QB and so the last four years or so were really hard on the team.

Last year the Titans got a new and much better QB Marcus Mariota and this year a new and better GM Jon Robinson who learned for twelve years under Belichick in New England.

The GM in his first move here traded our number one pick to the Rams for a boatload of picks including a first rounder in 2017 so Titans have two first round picks in 2017.

Out of all those picks this year in 2016 the Titans drafted a WR Tajae Sharpe in the 5th round. Usually that doesn't mean much coming in the last few rounds BUT the Titans have found a really good WR.

How good?  The Titans like the guy because he is a great route runner and go to guy for Mariota.

“He makes it easy,’’ Mariota said of Sharpe. “He is a very versatile athlete, and he’s done a lot for us already. He creates separation in and out of his routes and we are going to continue to expect these kinds of things out of him.”

Sharpe is already a first teamer as well as Mariota's go to guy and being featured in numerous NFL articles. Against Carolina in his last game he hauled in 6 passes for 68 yards.

Sharpe is featured on the NFL new show Good Morning Football as well....

Remember now that most who don't follow Tennessee are thinking Delanie Walker/Kendall Wright as leading wideout options but virtually no one YET knows of this Tajae Sharpe guy at WR.

Trust me even though he is a 5th rounder and a rookie Sharpe is looking like a guy who slipped through the cracks in the draft he is gonna be pretty good and most likely Mariota's go to guy.

Tajae Sharpe: Perfect Situation for Early Success?

Late-round picks face their own set of expectations, but they are usually negative outlooks such as "likely to be cut before Week 1" and "won't ever start a meaningful NFL game." The bar is pretty low for a late-round pick to outplay his draft status, but one Tennessee player looks to destroy expectations in 2016.

Tajae Sharpe was just a fifth-round pick (140th overall) in April's draft, but he may already be Mariota's No. 1 wide receiver after a wild offseason in Nashville. Sharpe is currently one of nine players with more than 100 receiving yards thru the second week of the preseason. Sure, that may not mean anything, but some of the lesser-known leading receivers in past preseasons eventually became productive players, including Stefon Diggs (2015), Seth Roberts (2015), Allen Hurns (2014), and Victor Cruz (2010). As a preview of things to come in his breakout season in 2011, Antonio Brown a sixth round pick led all players that preseason in receiving yards(230).

While Brown has become the poster boy for late-round receiving success, immediate success for Sharpe could make us rethink the way we look at late-round rookie receivers. It feels strange to talk up its rookie before September, but this is a unique situation that could lead to a historic rookie campaign for a fifth-round pick.

You might be wondering why we are highlighting a rookie with eight catches in two preseason games, but the fact that Sharpe is already starting for Tennessee is an accomplishment itself. One of the main reasons late-round picks rarely break out is that they do not get as many opportunities to shine as high draft picks. Now if the scouting was done correctly, those higher picks should be the better players, but we know some hidden gems slip through the cracks. An overlooked talent combined with the right situation around him can produce amazing results, such as Terrell Davis in Denver or Richard Sherman in Seattle. And there are good reasons to believe Sharpe could be productive right away.

While the level of competition left something to be desired, Sharpe's 111 receptions for Massachusetts in 2015 led all FBS receivers. Sharpe was not a one-year wonder either. As a junior in 2014, he caught 85 passes for 1,281 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns. He is more of an outside possession receiver, but that seems to fit right in with a Tennessee passing game that was led in targets by tight end Delanie Walker (133) and Harry Douglas (72) last year. Sharpe has reliable hands and runs good routes, two hallmarks of a possession receiver, and has adequate size at 6-foot-2.

The only other competition for Sharpe comes from Delanie Walker and Rishard Matthews Matthews is another potential tale of late-round success. He was a seventh-round pick by Miami in 2012, showed some playmaking ability over the years, then really impressed last season with a second-place finish in DVOA. A lot of low-volume, high-efficiency receivers struggle after changing teams, but Matthews is the biggest threat to Sharpe when it comes to being the No. 1 wide receiver this year.

Most late-round wideouts end up on a team with either an established set of starters or a stable of young, high draft picks trying to make their mark. But the 2016 Titans are different. Who should the quarterback trust on this particular offense? That was readily apparent when Sharpe and Matthews were made the starters. Mariota has already taken a liking to Sharpe in the preseason games, as he has eight catches compared to three for Matthews. While we still expect Mariota to spread the ball around this season, Sharpe's unusual climb to the No. 1 wide receiver role only looks to be gaining probability as the season approaches.

The receivers were not a strength for the Titans last season. If Sharpe and Matthews can be much more reliable, efficient targets for Mariota this season, then we should see an improved passing game. On Saturday against Carolina, Sharpe made two plays on third-and-long that will quickly endear him to fans and his quarterback. On a third-and-14, Sharpe made a tough catch in traffic for 20 yards, holding onto the ball after the hit. On a third-and-11, Sharpe reached up with full extension to snag a high pass for 16 yards and another big conversion that led to a touchdown.

Also the Titans just revamped their offensive line and are planning on running Derrick Henry and Demarco Murray so far this preseason both have done pretty well recently against Carolina and the week before against San Diego when they ran for nearly 300 yards.

Good stuff Mike, thanks.

Gonna try n roll with Super Mario and Walker/Sharpe combo in most of my leagues

I can see the Titans making a run a the division.

I know at first everyone was wondering why i had the Titans a team that just came off of a 3 win season ranked 25th in my recent poll that i did. Sure i could've put them 32nd or 31st but i knew a few weeks back they were better than they appeared. Last year Titans lost 5 games by four points or less meaning they were close to being an 8-8 team in Mariota's first year but the defense last year and this year will be the weak spot especially secondary. This will most likely be taken care of in 2017 they have two first round picks and i think next year they'll work on making the defense better.

The Titans should have a better line, better run game and better receiving game this year. This is due to new additions in each area usually a free agent and a draft pick. At RB they have vet Demarco Murray and rookie Derrick Henry,at WR they have rookie Tajae Sharpe and vet Rishard Matthews.  They also brought a center in free agency Ben Jones and draft Jack Conklin in the first round so they are serious about fixing the offense first.

Tajae Sharpe, wide receiver, Tennessee. One of the most predictive stats we have for receivers is yards per route run (YPRR). You take a receiver’s yards (163, in Sharpe’s case), divide it by the number of routes he’s run (34), and you come up with 4.79—the highest in the NFL this preseason. This stat worked well last year in assessing the potential of Jordan Reed. But it’s not just the numbers; operating almost exclusively on the outside Sharpe is also our third-graded receiver overall, operating in the upper echelon with the likes of Allen Robinson and Mike Evans. Not bad for a guy who played for UMass in the Mid-American Conference.
