Do you remember your first sports bet?

Flyers were -330 to win that series

Yeah and I remember thinking Detroit was going to steam roll them.

Philly was hyped, waaaay overhyped. The Red Wings had their way with Patrick Roy in Colorado and Hextall was nowhere near as good.

In my mind the wrong team was favoured and I was right. Detroit swept the series in 4 games. Not even close.

Its a fucking AWESOME feeling when in your brain you KNOW the dog is the much better team. +145 was an awesome price.

Do I?

Absolutely.

June 3rd 1997.

I flew to Vegas to bet the Detroit Red Wings vs Philly in the Stanley Cup Finals.

I couldn't get there for game 1 and I would have bet Detroit and they won of course but I did manage to get there for game 2 and checked in at the Imperial Palace.

Headed straight for the sportsbook and tried to bet everything I had with me on Detroit +145.

I approached the counter and laid out $3k and said I want it all on Detroit at +145. They wouldn't take it. First they asked to see my room key, then a couple of questions and they took my bet. After I bet the guy at the counter said I was nuts making that bet because no way was Philly going to lose 2 in a row at home. lol

The reason I was so confident was because of goaltending. Detroit was beating Patrick Roy in the previous series vs Colorado. He was 10X better than Flyers goalie Hextall and in  my mind I figured Detroit would score at least 3 goals every game.

Went up to my room and ordered a dozen Heinekens and dinner of Australian lobster and steak and waited for the game. Called my brother in Florida and told him who to cheer for.

Game was a rocking chair winner. Detroit scored first and was up 2-0 and cruised to a 4-2 win. Next day I bet another $3k on the Bulls 1st half -3 vs Utah and cashed. Ended up going home a winner of over $10K USD on that trip - all from sports betting.

Yes, I remember.

Damn. That's a good story. Do you think your future gambling career would be different if you had lost that first bet and gone home broke?

I don't think anything would have changed if that bet lost. I was making good money in 97, $3k was not alot of dough to me then.

I was prepared to lose $3k. Not that I believed Detroit could have gotten beat in that spot.

Looking back I bet over $3k on Chicago Bulls 1st half -3 in Utah the next night June 4th because I got to talking with one of the dealers at the craps pit who was from Buffalo NY and we were discussing sports. He put me on the bet and I bet it blind. Nuts. A black dealer from Buffalo convinced me to bet the bulls -3 1st half for THREEE THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS and I did.

Game was a laugher, I think the Bulls were up by 20 at the half in Utah.

Do you think about that trip every June 3? I have some great Las Vegas stories. I often think that it's worth any amount of money I lost just for the great stories...but it's better when you win.

No, I had to lookup the exact date. I knew it was from the 97 Stanley Cup Finals game 2. June 3rd means nothing to me.

Did you get an escort?

Haha, yeah I checked out a couple of escort ads but never did follow through because it reeked of scam. They said something like $300 an hour and they will "dance" for me or some other shit. Anything "extra" would be at their discretion, fukk that. $300 to dance, yeah get fucked fucko, homie don't play that.

This was one of my biggest pet peeves about Vegas, the hookers were expensive and shitty. Scamcity. I never did get a hooker in all my trips to Vegas.

Toronto escort/whore scene was/is 1000X better than Vegas, cheaper, better quality etc.

First sports bet with a non-friend was a 3 team NFL parlay on a parlay card in 6th grade. Lost all 3 games but I can't for the life of me remember the teams but one was the Niners. My friends dad was the gym teacher and he booked parlay cards to his friends and a bunch of the teachers. Me , his son, and one other friend were his "runners" to collect the cards and drop the envelopes.

Remember my first horse bet clear as day, only bc it was a big winner. 50-1 on a long shot at bay meadows where Russell Baze was huge chalk in the race. My grandfather hated Baze so I told him I was wanted to make my first bet against him. He laughed telling me I was throwing my money away. Needless to say my horse won going away and my degeneracy has never stopped, though thankfully have never bet horses for other than entertainment.
