Yes, seasoned.  I used peanut oil.  Supposedly, it doesn't burn as quickly as olive oil.

olive oil lowest burn temp so that's smart.

 

if you put pepper on the steak, and a decent amount, that's probably causing the most smoke. 

 

you need very little oil in a cast iron pan. eventually shouldn't have to use any.

 

also should season your pan before time in the oven
