No need to rent fancy car/convertible or whatever. Rent cheapest car available. Who cares? As for hotels, can stay in very nice hotels (yes, even in LA area) if one knows proper bidding tactics on Priceline and doesn't just book through the hotel or via expedia like a square. Also, many corporate codes available to use at hotels for those who have a clue (some with massive discounts). Stayed at a Hyatt in the LA area a few years back for $60 per night, including fees.
