RDTrains
I think this has been asked before but I have a dinner bet on this. If Team A is up by 7 and recovers a fumble or intercepts a pass can they run it back or is the game over?

fifty cint
I don't think you can any more.I think the play is blown dead as soon as theres a turn over,Don;t quote me on this though
Sol Aristatel
ASU best USC by 13 in OT in the late 90s. Scored first on offense and made PAT. Then got a pick 6 on defense to end the game. Amazing cover/bad beat. Depending which side you had.

RDTrains
Yes the game is over or yes they can run the turnover back for a TD?
Colonel Lingus
Why would they call play dead? The guy could fumble trying to run it back and other team could recover and run it back
Sol Aristatel
Yes the game is over or yes they can run the turnover back for a TD? Yes it's happened. Teams have won by 13 in OT. The only question is if they have recently changed the rule or not. Seems like I remember that they did. Not positive though.
richsox24
Why would they call play dead? The guy could fumble trying to run it back and other team could recover and run it backI think the play is dead at that point. On a turnover, if the defense then fumbles and offense recovers, that would be considered a new possession and start over at 1st and 10. And i dont think that can happen in OT any more. Ts179
Why would they call play dead? The guy could fumble trying to run it back and other team could recover and run it back Yes the refs would then be blowing the whistles while a live play is happening. I can't see that being the rule. Corner intercepts the QB and is walking into the endzone and they blow it dead. Doubt that

GreenDoberman
I had ASU in that game, a tremendous victory. Fifty Cint is correct, the Play is blown dead on the TO now. I think they changed the rules after that and they rule it dead. So the answer is no. Could be wrong. I remember that game vividly. Was standing in a sportsbook and watched grown men ripping up tickets, throwing them away and racing to the trash cans a few moments later. Also saw the ones on the other side with that stunned, glazed over, can't believe that happened look on their face.
drnkyourmlkshk1
No team can win by more than 7 in OT. Once the ball is turned over the game is over regardless of what takes place. You'll notice its the only time you see kids not go for the pick 6 as they've all been instructed its meaningless. The rule was changed directly after the USC game. Dink has a very crazy story about Billy Walter's, the number and that game specifically.

nothing but winners
Correct the rule was changed shortly after the USC game, I was on USC that day/night.....I remember it like it was yesterday, nothing big but had a couple hundred on USC and i think they were getting close to double digits...also had a parlay card with a cousin of mine that we each put 25 bucks on a 4 teaser, USC was the last team.....thought we wn for sure then the pick and run back.......my luck! Sol Aristatel
Now that I think about it.. Are we sure that was a pick 6? I'm thinking it might have been a scoop and score.
Sol Aristatel
Just found it on Youtube. It was a scoop and score off a controversial fumble call.
