And while we're at it.

You always talk about Sweeper's use of slang, but YOU USE MORE BLACK SLANG THAN HE DOES. Yep.

Follow along. Pay attention.

I posted this on a few forums. Not sure if this was one. I did an informal study on slang, because it has always fascinated me.

About 50% of USA slang comes from Black musicians and professional criminals, and most of the rest comes from itinerant whites who are considered lower class by many in society (carnies/circus people, military people, hoboes, con men, criminals, pro gamblers, etc.). This has been the case since the late 1800s.

Just because Sweeper uses Black musician slang from the 90s and 2000s, you give him shit. But you use Black musician slang from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, along with some of the new shit.

Cool? You dig? Solid. You don't? Square.

Them and the Sicilians were both considered that way.

And then you have the dynamic with the older immigrants who make fun of and/or victimize the newer immigrants. The older Italians called the newer Italians and Sicilians "Zips" as an insult.

The racial slur hunkie/honkie was made by housepicks' great-great grandfather (not really) at construction sites and factories to make fun of Brock Landers' great-great grandfather (not really). They called anyone from Eastern Europe that wasn't obviously a Russian, a Bohunk, etc. This was a slur based off "Bohemian" or Hungarian.

As an example, the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period. It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.

African slaves were very expensive during the late 1600s (50 Sterling). Irish slaves came cheap (no more than 5 Sterling). If a planter whipped or branded or beat an Irish slave to death, it was never a crime. A death was a monetary setback, but far cheaper than killing a more expensive African.

Even now, the northern italians look down at the rest of the country.  Italy is a weird country.
