-ondering if anyone has retuned to work after extended time out of the workforce...warning-long read*

Some background for those who may not know..

I have worked my entire adult life( *after college).   I had a great (paying) job in Denver for 16 years, but came home to care for mom who was in late stages of Alzeimers. was expected that arrangement might be 2 months to a year.   She lived 3 years and 5 months.  During this time was essentially home bound.  We hired some in home health, but for the most part was 24/7 gig. It was very isolating...spent most of my time in pjs/sweats.

I told myself I would take some time off following mom's death.  I had planned to brush up on my computer skills, decide what I wanted to do going forward etc.    A year later, done basically nothing.

I am now at the point I should/need to be doing something.   I am however, having an extremely difficult time getting motivated to go back and work in an office setting.  I'm having enough trouble forcing myself to be social and get out of the house, much less think about going from hanging out in my jammies all day with mom, to dressing up/hair/makeup etc and learning a new job.   The bottom line is I really just don't want to.  I don't know if I am scared, don't want to lose my freedom, or what.

This will probably be difficult for anyone to relate to that has not been in this position.   Has anyone ever taken time off from the workforce to return later?  How did you motivate to do it if you were not wanting to go back?

I am considering looking at other ways to make money so as not have to work for "the man."   Are there any legitimate work at home  options that would allow one to make $1000-2000/month?   I have rental and a little investment income, so don't need to make what I used to, but need to avoid eating into principal on savings.

I bought a book called "No excuses" to help with motivation...just realized I bought it a year ago and am still on the first chapter.   Hoping someone has dealt with this before.

Also, having med review soon...doctor thinks that I may be depressed and that is zapping motivation/desire to do something I always derived much pleasure from (work.)

It sucks till you start getting paid several times. Try and find a bs job that pays weekly to get back into the swing of things like getting up and going to bed at certain times. You would be surprised how much easier it is to get motivated with weekly pay. Preferably this will be a part time job so you are not jumping right into 40+hrs a week

i usually have 8 months off or so/year... really tough to get back into it on a daily basis and do tax returns for 90 hours/week

probably done with it quite soon, and i don't see a reason to ever go back

if you're looking for income, then look no further than gambling... should be easy to find $30/day in arbs

Embarrassed to say I don't know what you mean by arbs.  perhaps you could elaborate..

I had no idea that it was impossible to make %5 safely on your money these days.  I figure at minimum need $50/day after taxes (ha-used to make $50/hour) to be able to avoid going back to work.   Although insurance benefits would be a plus..paying $500 or so for insurance privately.   The structure would be good for me I think...I just am having a hard time mentally breaking thru to work preparedness.   I was warned this could happen being off so long, and had I known how long it would be...well I wouldn't havedone anything differently anyway.  I was getting paid to spend time with my mother in her last days..so I wouldn't change anything..just didn't know it would be so hard to get back at it.

Yeah. I was thinking along those lines...part time...I think I could manage with part time work as I have no large expenses other than insurance.   And if I did get a "bs job"  I wouldn't feel bad leaving if I felt I could not do it for whatever reason..even though about more regular volunteer work just to get in the habit of getting up/going to bed on schedule like you said.

There are tons of jobs here.    I probably will end up at Citibank or one of the banks here.  Would much rather do something more satisfying, though I don't know what that would be.   Where is the best place to look for work these days?   I know people advertise on CL, but can't imagine that is the go to place for most employers...is Monster still around?    Ugh. Dreading this.

I like this bet but is there still action if she doesn't play or has an injury?

You completely changed your life to cope with the situation you faced. Now that it's changed again you find yourself using the same tools in a different situation which is why it's not working.

You gave yourself a year to change and were faced with the paradox of choice. Too many potential choices not enough decision and a year later nothing has happened.

You need to force yourself to decide on something and do it/stick to it. There won't be any ideal choice but the point is to break the routine you've made for yourself.

The social isolation/depression is likely a byproduct of dealing with your mother. Getting out of the routine will likely dissolve those problems over time unless you've struggled with mental illness beforehand as well.

bookmaker screwed me recently on that for cycling (claim that for cycling and olympics all bets have action), so yes there's that risk on the bookmaker side... they will try to grade it a loss if she doesn't play at least one point

if serena is injured or out, just double down on the other side before it goes off the board so they can't cheat you on it

Can relate. Took a few years off and was virtually retired.

It was easy for me to motivate to go back since I missed the routine of working and interacting with people. Despite not liking what I do for work.

Yes...that's the thing..don't really feel unemployed...and I was hoping to be able to retire til I looked at all the retirement calculators...hahaha....yeah...not going to happen.  I have to either get braver in the stock market or pound the pavement.

...I just have to wrap my head around it.  4 plus years is a long time  to be away. I feel like I will be going kicking and screaming....fokkkkk.    Why are you doing something you don't like doing?  I did that for years because of the money and I liked my co-workers.  In this half of my life if I have to get out of the house (ha) I want to do something more satisfying without concentrating on the money part.

Aren't there tests of some kind that can tell you where your strengths are  and what you would be happiest doing?  I need something like that.

How often do those opportunities come along?  How many places do you post up at?

Do it bc he pays reasonably well. Too old and lazy to start over

Plus it's an easy job

you can find something every day if you look hard enough

like hangover said it can be a full time job... but you can also start slowly, post up at a few bonus books and see if you like it or are making anything that makes it worth the effort

I would look into cocktail serving at your nearest casino.  You will make 200-300 per night and will meet new people.  You can choose to only work 2-3 days a week.  They hire young and old as long as you look decent.

I kind of feel like that would be a complete waste of my education and talent (no offense to the cocktail waitresses of the world.)   I thought about working at the casino dealing roulette....that at least requires me to use my brain...although I'm sure waitressing pays better.  Plus I don't know if I could make that kind of money here.  They charge at the casino here for drinks...people aren't as generous I'm sure as when they are free.

Brick-do you know anyone that works at Grand Falls?

Also gambling is a terrible choice as a career.

It's one of the last outlets where misfits who have completely fucked up their life beyond repair can make some money.

If you can get yourself into employment in a corporate setting do it.

This. Gamble for fun and to possibly make some money.....not depend on it to make money. That is horribly unhealthy lifestyle choice even if winning money.

Yep you're right about it being a full time job but forgot one key detail, it can be a full time job that not only are you not getting paid for, you're actually losing money while putting all this time in .
