When all you can do is borrow to make interest payments you are at complete mercy of appetite for your debt and global bond yields/values. Doesn't matter how well your economy performs, if there are better places to invest than US debt and you are forced to bump your rates to compete, you're in a world of hurt. There is only so much money you can glad hand from the public's retirement funds and in a few short years when a dearth of baby boomers want their money, there is gonna be a big time problem.
