According to local media sources, the 11-year-old named Ahmed fainted in the middle of his competition. Ahmed, who was a member of the “Morlanwelz-Carnières” club for two years, was reported to be in good health before the start of his match. However, he suffered a heart attack after collapsing. He was immediately looked at by the medical team on scene and then taken to the hospital, where he breathed his last. Although it is still unknown what was the cause of his heart attack, data shows that a 79.1% of Belgium has been fully vaccinated. According to eyewitnesses, Ahmed fell before he started fighting, as he was not hit or shocked in any way during his match. By order of the police, the competition was suspended and the room vacated after the tragedy. Club owner Cathy Lejeune said, “He was a gentleman, funny boy and got along with everyone… he wanted to learn. Once he got to the club, he told me he was training three times a week.” On Monday, the Belgian authorities sent a team of doctors for psychological support and members of the Victim Assistance Service to the child’s karate school. A condolence book was placed in the gym where he was training. The child’s body is scheduled to be returned to Morocco for burial, where he is awaiting his father’s return from a work visit to China, in order to receive the body.
