It's a mercenary group started by a russian oligarch - PMC Wagner stands for private military co, not sure where wagner came from. They've been growing in prestige even before this war with several african countries replacing french troops with wagner supposedly because they are more effective(more brutal) with their resistance movements. They've been recruiting in russian prisons with a lot of success - they offer a complete pardon after 6 months of service and a chance to resume a normal life - many of them choose to remain in wagner after their 6 months because the money is good and they apparently like it. A report out last week said wagner now has over 50,000 men fighting in ukraine - in fact they do most of the fighting along with soldiers from the DPR and LPR. Wagner has their own planes, helicopters, artillary, the whole shebang. Last week he had a ceremony for men who had served their 6 months, he congratulated them and reminded them to not drink and dont rape women.
