The Justice Department announced the two federal charges on Monday against David DePape, 42, who is accused of brutally attacking the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). DePape is charged with one count of assault of an immediate family member of a United States official, which can be a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. He also is charged with one count of kidnapping, amounting to a 20-year maximum prison sentence. San Francisco police arrived at the home on Friday morning to see DePape and Pelosi struggling over a hammer. DePape was able to get the hammer away from Pelosi and violently attack Pelosi before officers were able to subdue DePape, according to police. She began traveling to San Francisco around mid-Friday and spoke with her husband after the attack. Paul Pelosi was transferred to a San Francisco hospital following the attack and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the speaker's office. “Mr. Pelosi was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. His doctors expect a full recovery," said Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi. “The speaker and her family are thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers from friends, constituents, and people around the country." There have been several conspiracy theories surrounding the nature of the attack, such as a third "unknown person" at the scene per Politico, which police had to clarify on Sunday. Police told NBC News that there was not a third person at the house despite making comments at a press conference on Friday that someone had opened the door for them when they knocked to perform a wellness check. Reports also circulated that DePape and Pelosi knew each other prior to the attack after a police audio clip was released, following a 911 call in which Paul Pelosi spoke in code. The dispatcher had told a police car that a caller did not know the man but advised "his name is David and then [said] he is a friend.” The dispatcher, Heather Grimes, also noted the caller “sounded somewhat confused," according to the Los Angeles Times.
