Because the American dollar is the free float fiat monetary standard. All debt is bought and sold in US dollars. So, as has already occured, the US government can just print more to cover. Of course that only bails out the government. You will probably pay $512.96 for a small tin of cat food for your Sunday dinner a la Merlin. The day the US dollar ceases to be the standard for the IMF you will all be slaughtered and the price of cat food will return to normal.
