He says in very recent times the world has seen democracies destroyed by ruling parties in countries such as Hungary, Turkey, Venezuela. It's important to remember most failures of democracies start with elections that a leader deligitimizes. These former democracies still hold elections but they don't mean anything. If the opposition complains, if there is opposition, they get killed or imprisoned. Angus King says he's never been so worried about the future of America's democracy. He believes the threat for our democracy has been this severe since 1860. Is Independent Sen. Angus King conflating the current emergency regarding a failing American democracy? The procedural vote to begin debate on the Freedom to Vote Act was 49 in favor to 51 against, far short of the 60 votes needed to advance the measure. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer changed his vote to "no" as a procedural maneuver that allows him to bring the bill to the floor again. All 50 Republicans voted against advancing to debate.
