  2. [unknown date] In West Grove township in Davis County Evergreen Cemetery has the grave of the daughter of Wm Carson who died of a rattlesnake bite. The date of deaths is not given but from the other deaths in this old cemetery it was likely in the 1840's or 1850's Report 600.

  6. 1849 Nancy Warner, a 28 year old lady,  died of a snake  bite in district 26 in Keokuk County Iowa. This was found in the 1850 Census mortality schedule for Iowa using an Ancestry.com search.  No other information is yet known about the circumstances of the bite.
  7. 1849 Ten year old Henry Sinco, according to a family history (report 239), was picking berries for a pie when he was bitten fatally by a rattlesnake. The  bite occurred close to their home near Galso (now Glasgow) in Jefferson County close to the Cedar river. An early history of Jefferson County (report 158) indicates that these were timber rattlesnakes.
  8. 1849 Andrew Jones was a 8 year old boy who died of a snake bite in Jackson County Iowa according to the 1850 Census  mortality schedule.
  9. 1851 [est.]** Twelve year old John Mort died of a rattlesnake in Van Buren County Report 645

  11. 1854 Malinda J. Coffman is recorded as having died of a snake bite.  She should have been about 26 years old.  She died two years after she married him and was likely fairly young.   Her death was in Appanoose County.  Report 214
  12. ** 1855 Martha Doud died from a rattlesnake bite in Marion County and was buried  (buried in  Bussey). Report 602

  18. ** 1858 A Burlington paper tells the story of the four year old daughter of Mr Hall who was bitten in the Burlington area while picking berries and died in a couple of days.  I suspect it was timber but both timber and massasauga rattlesnakes would have been Des Moines county back then. Report 362
  19. 1858 Eleven year old Orrin Teeple was bitten on the ankle while gathering blaqckberries in South fork Township in Jackson county and died 4 days latter. Report 502.

Couch as having died on July 21, 1868 when he was 8 years old. There were both massasauga and timber rattlesnakes in the county so we don't know which killed him. Report 168

Report 211.
  37. 1869 Nine year old Mary Wiaklend was "bitten by a rattlesnake" in August of 1869 in Spenser in Clay County according to the 1870 mortality schedule.  I have not heard of rattlesnakes from this county before.  So far I have not been able to uncover any details of the snake bite. I have looked at a  copy of the original mortality schedule and this was transcribed correctly into the Ancestry.com database  Report 209
  38. 1869** Seven year old Alanzo Miller was bitten by a timber rattlesnake in Lucas County and died the next day.  Report 342

  42. **1871 A little daughter of John Cooper who lived in rural Monroe County died after being bit by a rattlesnake while she was collecting hazelnuts. Report 371
  43. 1872** a thirteen year old girl was bitten 5 miles west of Williams Iowa and died within a couple of hours.  The quickness of the death and the fact that Timber rattlesnakes were known from Webster City just to the west would suggest (but not prove) that this was a bite from a timber rattlesnake Report 583.
  44. 1872 Three year old Mathilda Hoglund, a farmer's daughter, died of a rattlesnake bite when she was taking lunch to the men in the field.  From habitat the snakes were found in, and the lack of rock exposures (usually present for timbers in this area) it is likely that she was bitten by a massasauga. This occurred on a farm in the vicinity of Kiron in Crawford County Report 72
  45. ** 1873 Mrs Jacob Gustin of Mt Ayre, Ringgold County died from the effects of a rattlesnake bite.  Mrs. gustin died about a week after being bitten.  Report 418
  46. ** 1874 A Norwegian, who lived in Adams County, in the vicinity of the town of Carl was bitten by a rattlesnake and died the same evening.  The rapidity of death suggests a timber rattlesnake.  Report 369

  52. 1876 Seven year old Harry Ford was bitten in the foot by a rattlesnake while helping his dad break sod in Jasper County.  A bite in the prairie while breaking sod would be a likely massasauga habitat, but there were also timber in the county (see number 13 above) and either one of them could have caused the death.  Report 169.
  53. 1876 A young man, probably eleven year old Frankie Atkinson, died of a rattlesnake bite in the Oakland area in Pottawattamie County.  From the quickness of the death, I suspect this was likely a timber or possibly a prairie rattlesnake.  Both of these are more lethal than the massasauga.  Report 126
  54. 1879  Austin Bleydock, a 16 year old, died of a snake bite in Liberty in Keokuk County according to the 1880 mortality schedule. I could not find a town of Liberty but there is a township by that name, which may be what the mortality schedule is referring to.  Report 203 (not written up).
  55. 1879 Mary Lesley, a 32 year old married lady, was bitten by a "black rattle" according to the 1880 mortality schedule.  This was in or near Oxford in Jones County.  Black rattlesnake is the name often [but not always] used to refer to massasauga.  Report 210 (not written).
  56. **1879 Mary Lesley was pregnant at the time and lost her baby because of the bite.

  66.  1888 A person who was reading microfilms for family history alerted me to rattlesnake accounts in the Dunlap area in Harrison County.  One of these was 50 year old Jemina Bonar. She was bitten a week before her death. Report 76
  67. ** 1888 Six year old Lawerence Heckathorn was bitten by a rattlesnake near Elston (Ringgold County) report 541
  68. 1889 [date wrong in my abstract] According to County death records of Mitchell County, a 70 year old farmer, Cornelius Mulvarhill who lived in the NE corner of the county died of a rattlesnake bite.  The Iowa State reporter indicates that he was bitten on the toe by a "large rattlesnake" while stacking flax and died a day and a half latter.   Mahaffy 2007  Report 107
  69. 1889  The Dunlap Reporter records the very sudden death of the three year old son of the James Bartholomew in their yard in Moorhead in Monona County. Report 140
  70. 1889  A big snake (six feet according to the accounts) bit 8 year old Nellie Kingman on their rural farm near Volga in Western Clayton county.  The size of the snake indicates that this death was caused by a timber rattlesnake.  Timber rattlesnakes are still found in the county to the north.  Report 134
  71. 1895** Ten year old Fred Finch was bitten while picking goose berries in Adair County and died in a couple of hours. Report 359.
  72. 1895 One of Ed Willis's "little girls"  was bitten by a large rattlesnake on her grandma's yard near Andover in Clinton County (change this on the map) and died in about three hours. Given the description as a large rattlesnake and the rapidity of death this was likely a bite by a timber rattlesnake. Report 233.
  73. ** 1895 Hilda Weller died of a rattlesnake bite in Lucas or possibly Monroe County. Report 374

  77. 1906 ** Five year old Carroll Michener, died four days after being bitten by a rattlesnake in Ohio TWP in Madison County. Report 540.
  78. 1908 The eight year old Aphonse Hawes of Lafayette in Allamakee County   Lafayette could refer to a boat landing about a mile above Chantry along the Mississippi or to the township this town was in along the Mississippi.  Report 234.
  79. 1922 Four year old Worth Eugene Nelson died on a rural farm east of Tipperary in Lucas or Monroe County died about 8 hours after being bitten by a large rattlesnake that was probably a timber.
  80. 1923 **Twelve year old Minnie Woodward was bitten by a rattlesnake in her yard in a rural area near Farmington in Van Buren County and died the next day.  The rapidity of death would suggest a timber rattlesnake. Report 338
  81. 1943 I found death of a 24 year old man who was bitten by what was most likely a timber rattler in Eastern Iowa while mowing hay.  I am thinking of publishing this information, so I will withhold the details until I submit my article. Report 269
  82. ** 1944 Four year old  Darla K. Gepfert died after being bitten on a farm in the Bellevue area in Jackson county.  The rapidity of the death and location would suggest that this was a timber rattlesnake bite. Report 339.

As I was putting this together Doug Atkinson contacted me about one of the deaths (the son of one of his ancestors).  He offered to do some searches for me since he has some genealogical tools and knows how to do effective searches.  Doug quickly came up with about 13 more deaths.
