More epic rains in california, drought still on though

Enormous new rains have reservoirs swelling to overflowing, the oroville dam(2nd largest) in northern california is rising at almost 1 ft per hour, at that rate sometime tomorrow water will begin flowing over an emergency spillway that has never been used since the dam was built, They're trying to release water but the main spillway is damaged by recent releases, the shasta dam(the states largest reservoir) is beyond the safety margin they need to allow for more rains.

Meanwhile  california Gov. jerry brown refuses to admit the drought emergency is over, water is power in CA and he cant let it go, the sierra has a massive snowpack, southern CA has received more rain already than they do in a normal year and northern california is flooded.

Liberalism in action folks.

Where is the emergency spillway? What part of Northern Cali?

Where is the emergency spillway? What part of Northern Cali?

Oroville dam is about 150 miles NE of  san fran, the current level is 888ft, at 900 ft water will begin uncontrollably flowing over the concrete edge of the emergency spillway. the level has risen about 40 ft in the last 3 days and is rising about .8 ft per hour. If it goes over the top it will flow  over open terrain and cause massive erosion of the countryside and cause hell in the river below( they are currently trying to rescue salmon hatcheries downstream) and flooding downstream, current inflow is 185000 cubic ft per second(which is enormous).

The point of all of this is the drought is over, and they refuse to admit it.

last hourly reading 889.5 ft, up ,8 ft, they've up releases to 45000 CFS, it will badly damage the already damaged main spillway, they must be getting desperate.

New report that the entire lower 3rd of the spillway is blown out, they said they have to allow it out, they're upping the releases, you can google it if you want.

It really is scary the way they can deny reality and get away with it.  But, big government lovers will never let any part of government die no matter how useless and wasteful!

Just what, exactly, does the Department of Education do that helps any student?  How does the Department of Energy help the average American?  How much do we spend on these departments for no return?

They told us to let our grass dry out and to drain our swimming pools, on and on they went about the drought and everyone listened and did their part only to have the state tell us they had no place to store the water so they had to rent a place to put it and we would all be getting billed for it......amazing

Build that pipeline Mr Trump

At 6am the water level is 894 ft (6 ft to go), they've upped releases to 65000 CFS, that spillway is gonna be destroyed. As of now 1.2 million gallons of water are flowing into the reservoir every second...that's 4.5 billion gallons every hour. After saying all day yesterday that there would be no downstream flooding, they are now warning people to prepare to evacuate.

Govt cant predict a day ahead and yet we trust their long term predictions.

Ya I live here but any state that elects Jerry Brown not once but twice deserves to get flooded.

Good to know. I am sure they are happy to know their problems are over and desert farms can continue for hundreds of years.

I know you're talking tongue in cheek, the reality is that the sky is not falling, 6 months ago CA faced unending drought doom, now it's gone -poof. Lake mead will fill again, and drop again, there was a time when rational people realized this, what happened? When did fear and panic become the norm?

Not really. You cannot farm in a desert. That will one day end. People think that day will never come. But it could be that time is running out. When it does, there is going to be hell to pay.

Extra large snowpack in the rockies, Lake mead should get a splash in June, they'll pump lake powell up first though.

Lake Mead needs more than a splash. The strategy to fill it first is probably the best one. But it will never be full again. Drive to Lake Mead, look at the giant bath ring and how far it is above the water line. One wet winter changes nothing. It's exactly as stupid as saying there's no global warming because it's cold in Minnesota today.

There wont be "hell to pay" there will be less water, and people will adjust, as they always have. Farming in the desert is reasonable if you have the water, surely you can agree with that? Water is not "used up" generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of using aquifer water for trivial uses, but lakes, rivers, etc, letting it flow to the sea could be considered wasteful.

To those who say one wet winter changes nothing, that's ridiculous, of course it changes it, that's the way the world and weather is, one continuous cycle, except if you're crazy and think that all of history can be disregarded, because I want it to.

Actually, history says droughts can last hundreds of years and the scientists think this one could. Only on year 5 and California is already using up its ground water to feed almonds to the Chinese to make a few farmers a lot of money. There will be hell to pay.

6 weeks ago in california, when the first few storms were moving in, they were saying things like "it'll take a lot more than 1 or 2 big storms to fill these depleted reservoirs", well, they were right...it took 4 or 5 more, now they're spilling water over the top. The forecast is another storm late next week.

You're right though, sometimes droughts can last a long time, that is a fact, claiming that we are currently in one(decades or centuries long one) is merely wishful thinking for the doom and gloom crowd, who by chance have solutions designed to take our money. Dont be so naive.

Maybe you should take another look at Lake Mead. It's a desert. Putting huge growing populations in a desert and counting on the water to last is pure idiocy. Just because people want it to last, does not mean it will. Just one of the many things the US is in denial about. A good rain in Northern California is not going to do 80% of California a damn bit of good.
